Tara Hughes is Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer at California State University, Monterey Bay. She provides executive leadership for the university’s information technology strategy, services, operations, and governance in support of student success, teaching and learning, and institutional effectiveness.

As Chief Information Officer, Hughes works closely with campus leaders to align technology planning, digital transformation, cybersecurity, accessibility, and service delivery with the university’s mission and priorities. Her portfolio includes enterprise applications, digital platforms, academic and classroom technologies, infrastructure and support services, and information security.

Hughes joined ºÚÁÏÉçapp in 2024 after serving as Chief Information Officer at California State University Maritime Academy. Earlier in her career, she held leadership roles at California State University Channel Islands, where her work focused on service excellence, student support, operational improvement, and institutional innovation.

Across her career in higher education, Hughes has been known for building strong partnerships, aligning people around shared priorities, and helping organizations move forward in thoughtful and practical ways. She has led initiatives related to campus digital experience, AI access and literacy, enterprise modernization, academic software governance, and audit and accessibility readiness.

Hughes is active in higher education leadership nationally and across the California State University system. She serves as Vice Chair of the EDUCAUSE Board of Directors and Chair of the CSU CIO Council.

We coordinate administrative and operational support services within Information Technology to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of our services across the campus.

We lead budget planning and financial oversight for campus Information Technology to ensure responsible resource management and alignment with university priorities.

We establish and oversee IT policies to ensure compliance with CSU, state, and federal regulations and promote secure, accessible, and reliable systems.

We lead the development and execution of the university’s IT strategy in partnership with campus leadership to set priorities, drive innovation, and strengthen digital infrastructure.
